Khums

In Islam, khums (Arabic: خُمْس‎ Arabic pronunciation: [xums], literally 'one fifth') refers to the required religious obligation of any Muslims to pay one-fifth of their acquired wealth from certain sources toward specified causes. It is treated differently in Shia and Sunni Islam. This tax is paid to the imam, caliph or sultan, representing the state of Islam, for distribution between the orphans, the needy, and the [stranded] traveler. In Sunni Islam tradition, the scope of khums tax has been ghanim, which is defined as the spoils of war.

You are responsible to pay Khums on whatever you own including investments on today's value if you did not pay for that investments previously. If you paid previously then no Khums again on that investment unless the value of the investment has increased. In such case you need to pay for the extra amount on the value more that what you have already paid previously. No difference if you receive dividends or not as far as there is a market value of your investment.

The claim of Buraida against Ameerul Mo’mineen (AS) was instigated by Khalid ibn Al-Waleed. Such claim can not be trusted because it came from Munafiqs.

‘Imam Ali (AS) did not have any relationship with any woman during the life of Lady Fatima (AS). Even if the narration is authentic and the share of Imam Ali (AS) was a female slave, it does not mean that he had slept with her but he can sell her or keep her for serving his wife or children.

Khums is a wajib duty applied to every mukallaf. Once you reach the age of taklif, you are independently responsible for your wajibaat. If you  meet the requirements of khums, then you must pay it, regardless of whether you are financially dependent on someone else or not.

As for gifts, you will need to refer to your Marja' taqleed, to see if according to him, khums is applicable on gifts. According to A.U. Sistani, it is.

So, if your khums day comes, and you have yet to use that gift, or you have savings, then you need to pay its khums.

And Allah knows best.
