He Acts Like He Doesn’t Know Us - 30 Verses For 30 Days 11/30
Tafsir Verse 11:12
Salamun alaykum, dear brothers and sisters, and welcome to the 11th Tafsir clip of this month of Ramadan. In this clip, InshaAllah, we are going to delve into verse number twelve from Surat Yunus. This is a verse that in many ways plays out in our life quite often, unfortunately. And you will understand why I say unfortunately as we go through the verse.
The verse is explaining the situation that the human being has, when he is blessed with something, the way he addresses Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, the way he speaks to Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, when his problem is solved, the way he talks to Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, versus the times where he is in need. The times where he is in need, the Qur'an will explain that he is constantly praying to God. But the moment Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala solves his problem, then his Akhlaq and his approach to Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala fundamentally changes.
The verse starts out like this: " Wa idha massa al-Insana adh-dhurr da'ana li jambihi aw qa'idan, aw qa'ima" (10:12). Whenever We put the human being through a difficulty, something happens. A problem comes up, a situation comes up. This human being all of a sudden comes praying to Us. Many of us have witnessed this in our own lives.
All of a sudden we become religious. All of a sudden we raise our hand in duh. We remember God even though we didn't remember Him other times, and so on and so forth. And the Qur'an puts it very beautifully. The Qur'an says: " da'ana li jambihi aw qa'idan, aw qa'ima" (10:12). He will pray to Us while he is sitting, while he is standing up, while he is lying on his side. In other words, in all of these different situations, any moment he gets, he is going to pray to Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, because he is in need, he needs help. So he is constantly in prayer.
But here is where the verse mentions that the Akhlaq of the human being starts to change. And this is a lesson for us, because it's as if Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala doesn't know what to do with us anymore. Sometimes when you are dealing with very, very young children, if they are in a bad mood, whatever you do, you can't win with them. They are in a bad mood, they are frustrated.
It's as if Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala is saying if We give the human being a difficult time, he comes praying to Us. The moment We solve his problem, then what happens? The moment We solve his problem: "falamma kashafna 'anhu dhurrahu marra ka an lam yad'una ila dhurrin massahu" (10:12), he will come and walk by Us as if he does not even know Us, as if he never even asked Us for a favor. Meaning that now he becomes so arrogant, he becomes so ghafil, he is so oblivious of Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala. Now he comes and he goes. He lives his life. He doesn't even care about God anymore.
And this is something really to be ashamed of, us as human beings, that when we are in need, we knock on His door. The moment He solves our problem, then all of a sudden, we act as if we never even needed His help.
Imagine if a friend did something like that to us. Sometimes you will come across things like this in life, where you do something for someone. In that moment, they are begging, and pleading. You take care of their problem, but then when you take care of the problem, you might see them a week later, later or two months later. All of a sudden this person acts like he never even asked for help. As if you guys are strangers. Yes.
We have to be careful that we don't approach Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala in this manner.
